Giacomo Ganzerli Trio

The Giacomo Ganzerli Trio is a contemporary jazz project founded in 2024 by Italian drummer and composer Giacomo Ganzerli, featuring Daniele Nasi on tenor saxophone, Michele Bonifati on electric guitar, and Ganzerli on drums, percussion and electronics.

Conceived as a bassless ensemble, the trio explores an open musical space where composition and improvisation continuously interact. The absence of bass is not simply a timbral choice, but a central element of the group’s research. Rhythm, harmony, melody, low registers, density and space are constantly redistributed among the three musicians, allowing each instrument to move beyond its conventional role. Electronics are part of the same process, with loops, sequences and samples treated as living musical material in dialogue with acoustic and electric instruments. The resulting language moves between contemporary jazz, free improvisation and electroacoustic soundscapes, with collective listening at its core.

The trio’s debut album, The Art of Leaving Blankness, was released on January 18, 2026, by nusica.org. Its eight original compositions were written by Ganzerli and draw on personal experiences, memories, books, people and meaningful places. The title was inspired by the trio’s experience in China, where Ganzerli encountered the concept of Liúbái during a tour in Shanghai. The idea of intentionally leaving empty space within an artwork became central to the album’s aesthetic, giving silence, suspension and what remains unsaid the same expressive importance as what is played.

Live performance has become a fundamental part of the project’s development. Following an eight-concert debut tour across Italy and Germany in 2025, the trio was invited to Shanghai for two performances in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute of Shanghai, including an appearance at the Shanghai Spring International Music Festival. After the release of its debut album, the trio embarked on a 23-concert European tour between February and March 2026, with performances in Italy, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Spain. The tour included venues such as JazzStudio Nürnberg, JazzKeller Hanau, Jazzhaus Heidelberg, Jazz Point Linz, Schall und Rauch in Basel, Clarence Jazz Club in Málaga and 23Robadors in Barcelona, as well as an appearance on Rai Radio 3’s Piazza Verdi. Further 2026 appearances include JazzInsieme Festival, Jazz Area Metropolitana and Mantova Jazz Young, followed by an autumn tour across the United Kingdom and Germany, including Matt & Phred’s Jazz Club in Manchester, MAMPF in Frankfurt and Jazz am Schiessberg in Calw.

In January 2027, the trio will release its second album, Songs of Becoming, on the Italian label Ritmo & Blu. The album expands the group’s sound through the collaboration with Italian-German singer and composer Francesca Gaza, introducing voice, electronics and lyrics in both Italian and English. While The Art of Leaving Blankness was rooted primarily in Ganzerli’s personal experiences, Songs of Becoming turns its attention outward, exploring broader themes such as memory, the passage of time, transformation and the construction of identity. The voice becomes both a narrative and timbral element, fully integrated into the ensemble rather than functioning as a separate lead voice. The album was recorded at Studio Ritmo & Blu with Stefano Castagna and produced with the support of Nuovo IMAIE.

Alongside the new release, the trio is currently developing its 2027 international touring activity, with itineraries being planned across Bulgaria and Georgia, a possible tour in Japan, and the development of a project in Chile. These plans are currently in progress and should not yet be considered confirmed. Over the course of its development, the project has received support from Pathways to Jazz (USA), Music for Love, Nuovo IMAIE and GAI – Giovani Artisti Italiani.
